Based on data from a qualitative study of an electrical and electronics engineering study programme, this study found that studying engineering in a PBL environment involves not only the mastery of technological knowledge but also an engineering identity development process. However, the association of an engineering identity with masculinity and the culturally defined engineering competencies leads to different learning experiences for male and female students. The nature of hard-core engineering subjects, based on male interests, privileges men and acts as a barrier to women. </style>
<doi><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">10.1080/03043790500430185</style></doi><issue><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">1</style></issue><work-type><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Article</style></work-type><accession-num><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">20063459</style></accession-num><notes><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Xiang-Yun Du 1; Email Address: xiangyun@plan.aau.dk; Affiliation: 1: Department of Development and Planning, Fibigerstræde 13, 9220, Aalborg East, Denmark; Source Info: Mar2006, Vol. 31 Issue 1, p35; Subject Term: ENGINEERING; Subject Term: ENGINEERING students; Subject Term: PROBLEM-based learning; Subject Term: ACTIVE learning; Subject Term: ENGINEERING -- Study &amp; teaching; Subject Term: GENDER; Subject Term: UNIVERSITIES &amp; colleges; Subject Term: ELECTRICAL engineering; Subject Term: DENMARK; Author-Supplied Keyword: Engineering education; Author-Supplied Keyword: Gender; Author-Supplied Keyword: Identity; Author-Supplied Keyword: Learning; Author-Supplied Keyword: PBL environment; NAICS/Industry Codes: 611310 Colleges, Universities, and Professional Schools; Number of Pages: 8p; Document Type: Article</style></notes></record></records></xml>
