The effect of journal self-citations and intra-citing within a discipline to the bibliometric data computation can be confounding, especially since bibliometric scorings of journal impact or citations is becoming a increasingly popular measure ot use in assessing the scientific merits of research or researchers. In this study, six journals were selected from the multidisciplinary sciences subject category where the trend of self-citations and intra-citing were analysed. These journals were chosen as they published more than 450 citable articles in the year 2007 and had available bibliometric data for a 10-year period. The results showed that self-citations rose as much as +23.98% while intra-citing declined up to −5.80% over the observed period. The author discusses the effect that extravagant self-citing has on bibliometric measures (when such citations have little association with the quality of the published work)and the limitations of the journal impact factor measure. The author concludes by offering some suggestions on how to improve the validity of these measurements.</style>
<doi><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">10.1007/s11948-009-9118-5</style></doi><issue><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">4</style></issue><work-type><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Article</style></work-type><accession-num><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">45471919</style></accession-num><notes><style face="normal" font="default" size="100%">Foo, Jong Yong Abdiel 1; Email Address: foo.jong.yong@sgh.com.sg; Affiliation: 1: Division of Research, Singapore General Hospital, 31 Third Hospital Avenue, Bowyer Block Level 3, Outram Road, Singapore 169608, Singapore; Source Info: Dec2009, Vol. 15 Issue 4, p491; Subject Term: EDUCATION -- Research; Subject Term: BIBLIOGRAPHICAL citations; Subject Term: BIBLIOGRAPHY; Subject Term: COMPUTER network resources; Subject Term: DATABASES; Subject Term: CITATION analysis; Subject Term: JOURNAL productivity; Author-Supplied Keyword: Bibliographical database; Author-Supplied Keyword: Bibliometric data; Author-Supplied Keyword: Citations; Author-Supplied Keyword: Indexing; Author-Supplied Keyword: Science metrics; Number of Pages: 11p; Illustrations: 3 charts, 8 graphs; Document Type: Article</style></notes></record></records></xml>
