AbstractIn this paper, the author takes the view of a dental patient and makes the argument of why a dentist should treat HIV-positive patients. The article first gives an analysis of professions, the second part applies this analysis to some central questions concerning dentists, other dental professionals and HIV-infected patients, and the third part argues that because dentists have a professional monopoly, and have statements in their code of ethics that requires dentists to serve the public with only "reasonable discretion in selecting patients," dentists have a moral obligation to serve patients with HIV.
