AbstractA student in biodesign with a Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering has received the patient's consent to be in the operating room and observe a cardiovascular surgical procedure. When one of the assisting physicians leaves the room, another surgeon asks the student to fill in and hold the retractor and use the scissors to cut the knots being tied by the surgeon. Should the student do this? Does the consent given by the patient cover this kind of involvement in the surgery?
