Code Of Ethics
Preamble
Mindful of the farreaching responsibility a physician assumes in care
of the relationship with patients, society, other health care professionals
and to self the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery
promulgates the following Code of Ethics to be used as a standard of
behavior for the honorable otolaryngologyhead and neck surgeon in the
performance of duties and in the care of patients. These ethical principles
should be aspired to by the Fellows and Members of the Academy. Further,
this Academy also endorses the principles of the American Medical Association's
Code of Ethics as guidelines to which all physicians must adhere.
Principles
1. In all circumstances, the best interest of the patient must be foremost.
2. The patient must be treated with competence, respect for dignity, and honesty. Confidences shall be kept private except as otherwise required by Law.
3. The physician must maintain proficiency and competence through continuing study, and be diligent in the administration of patient care.
4. Fees must be commensurate with the service rendered and the ability of the patient to pay.
5. The impaired physician must withdraw from that part of practice which Is affected by the impairment.
6. Academy
members, should assist their colleagues in complying with these Principles.
