Abstract

This legal petition was submitted to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by the International Center for Technology Assessment, along with a coalition of consumer, health, and environmental groups, calling for the EPA to use its pesticide regulation authority to regulate consumer products that use or contain nano-sized silver particles. The petition found 260 different consumer products containing nano-silver and outlines the potential negative impacts of a widespread use of nano-silver and its release into the environment. The petition finally calls on the EPA to label nano-silver as a pesticide, to clarify that nano-pesticides and a new pesticide substance that requires new regulations, and for the EPA to assess the potential human heath and environmental risks of nano-silver.
