Abstract

Report explains the Life cycle assessment (LCA, a risk assessment took that can help corporations and researchers determine likely environmental impacts of a nanotechnology product during various stages in its life cycle. It emphasizes a "cradle to the grave" approach to assure the safe, sustainable, and responsible commercialization of nanotechnology. The LCA tool will be limited in some specific areas due to the lack of toxicity data and understanding of some types of nanoparticles and their possible effects on the environment and human health. The report also concludes that the existing International Organization for Standardization and other widely used frameworks for LCA are fully applicable to nanomaterials and nanoproducts.
