Abstract

This report by the insurance group, Lloyd's of London, reports that nanotechnology is suffering from a lack of regulation. Currently, almost all regulation of nanotechnology is done using existing regulatory mechanisms. The report covers current research done on the possible positive and negative effects of nanotechnology on humans and the environment, covers how nanomaterials are being used in commercial products, current regulation of nanotechnologies in the U.K and internationally, and the public perception of nanotechnology research and development. In conclusion, the report urges insurers to carefully watch the rapid development in the nanotechnology field, to consider possible adverse scenarios such as product recalls, and possible large adverse exposure to nanomaterials, to carefully consider both the potential benefits of nanotechnology, and its possible negative effects.
