Abstract

This report, requested by the United Kingdom House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, looks at the possible benefits and safety issues raised by the use of nanotechnologies in the food sector to see if nanotechnologies may play a valuable rose, if effective systems are in place to ensure that consumers are aware of and protected against potential risks, and to understand and address some of the concerns that the public may have about the use of nanotechnology in the food sector. The report discusses nanoscience and nanotechnologies, the use of this technology in the food sector, safety knowledge gaps and the adequacy of current legislation, guidance for companies on regulatory enforcement, and effective communication and engagement issues that need to be addressed.
