Abstract

This backgrounder published by the International Council on Nanotechnology summarizes the findings of two recent studies that demonstrated that some multi-walled carbon nanotubes can induce in mice a similar response to that induced by certain asbestos fibers. The backgrounder looks at the experimental methods used in these studies, further questions raised that should be answered through further research, and comments from scientists, toxicologists and other experts on the findings of these two studies. The author of this backgrounder states that though much more research must be done to understand the potential implications for humans, these two studies point towards the need for a careful assessment of the potential for multi-walled carbon nanotubes to cause injury to humans.
