Abstract

The author discusses the difficulty the cosmetic industry is having in deciding to use or avoid the mention of nanomaterials in their marketing of cosmetic products. Nanomaterials are already included in the ingredients of a number of cosmetics, and they hold a huge promise for improving products of this kind. However, lawmakers in Europe and the United States are seeking to develop legislation to help protect consumers for potentially negative health effects that may emerge. The article discusses how many cosmetic companies are blurring or avoiding references to nanotechnology, and recommends that consumers look at database of nanotech consumer products maintained by the Project for Emerging Nanotechnologies at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.
