The public should be consulted on contentious research and development early enough for their opinions to influence the course of science and policy-making. The article discusses various European projects that are using public engagement approaches to policymaking, such as Nanodialogues in the United Kingdom and the French National Institute of Agronomic Research's recent work on engaging the public in discussion about field trials of a genetically engineered vine that is resistant to some viruses. The authors summarize the important lessons learned from these public engagement exercises and the importance of undertaking these efforts early enough in the research and development process when it is still feasible to change course
