This article reviews the understanding of the human health hazards potentially posed by nanoscale materials, relates these risks to those posed by aerosols of combustion particles and asbestos, and discuss early steps towards regulation and the difficulties facing regulators in controlling potentially harmful exposures in the absence of sufficient scientific data.
