Abstract

This report by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment surveyed 100 experts, asking them to assess the potential risks of nanotechnology applications in the areas of food, cosmetics, surface coatings and textiles. The experts predicted a moderate to major increase in the consumption of all nanomaterials over time, and identified airborne nanomaterials as potentially being a larger hazard. However, the experts predicted that most hazards could be avoided and that research should be done on a case by case basis. The report concludes with nine general test criteria for nanomaterials.
