Abstract

The authors of this article examine a number of nanotechnology-focused public engagement activities that have taken place in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Australia, and the different approaches these projects have taken in articulating the issues raised in these dialogues. The authors note a shift in how governments are attempting to manage the potential risks and benefits associated with nanotechnology, and predict that transparency and further public engagement activities of this kind will play a role in shaping nanotechnology policy development and in protecting the public interest.
