Abstract

This review of the United States National Nanotechnology Initiative by the President's Advisory Panel on Science and Technology found that, along with the need to provide effective coordination among participating agencies, there must be a stronger effort to prioritize environmental, health and safety research to keep up with the rapid pace of technological innovation. The committee recommended that the NNI expand communication and outreach efforts, especially in respect to the real and perceived benefits and risks of nanotechnology, to develop and implement standards critical for nanomaterial identification, characterization, and risk assessment, and to develop a coordinated research strategy on environmental, health and safety risks of nanotechnology.
