Abstract

This paper looks at the role humanities and the social sciences should play in in asking fundamental questions about the development and overall societal implications of nanotechnology, and informing the public about these reflections. The author first looks at the role these two fields are already playing in the public acceptance of nanotechnology, and then argues that far from using ethics as a tool for encouraging the public acceptance of this new technology, the involvement of humanities and the social sciences in nano research and development can help look at the overall ethical assessment of nanotechnology research, and in that way help the public to make an informed judgment about the directions nano research and development should go in the future.
