Abstract

This article puts nanoparticles in the context of conventional particle toxicology, and looks at the knowledge that has been gained in the study of other particles, such as silica and asbestos, to see if this knowledge can provide relevant lessons for newly engineered nanoparticles. This article looks at hazards relevant to humans, provides an introduction to some of the emerging literature and findings about the fate and behavior of nanoparticles in the environment.
