Abstract

Results of a survey on the role of risk research in nanotechnology risk governance conducted from September to November 2005 by the International Risk Governance Council. Five participants of fifteen responded to the survey. The most widely held concern by research organizations was that currently regulatory structures are insufficient to cope with the unique characteristics of nano-materials. Survey results show that research organizations were addressing this concern by collecting and disseminating information on the environmental, health, and safety of nanotechnology, and secondly were developing recommendations to policy makers for the development of sufficient risk governance strategies for nanotechnology. Surveyed organizations saw collaboration between different stakeholders and communication of potential risks to policy makers and other interested parties as key to reducing the possible negative effects of nanotechnology. Respondents highlighted the need for transparency in risk communication to the general public, and the need for this type of communication to be open from researchers and policy makers to the general public and from the general public to researchers and policy makers. Paper includes recommended governance strategies, and individual survey responses.
