Abstract

While nanotechnology has the potential to transform medicine with potential uses spanning alls aspects of disease, diagnosis, prevention and treatment, relatively little is known about the safety of nanomaterials in medicine. Researchers are now working to assess the potential risks of nanotechnology to help avoid unwanted surprises. Article summarizes the current focus on nanotechnology research to assess potential health and environmental risks, the current public perception of nanotechnology, and the highlights some of the current efforts on nanomedicine, including programs funded by the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute.
